Brief Historical References
- The Egyptians (circa 3000-2000 BCE) divided the night sky into 36 groups of stars called "decans" (from Greek "deka" meaning ten, as each ruled approximately 10 days)
- These decans were primarily used for timekeeping at night
- They were not yet connected to zodiac signs (the 12-sign zodiac came later) or Tarot (which didn't exist)
- When the Babylonian zodiac of 12 signs was adopted in Hellenistic Egypt after 300 BCE, the decans were reorganized to fit within the zodiac framework (3 decans per sign)
- Texts attributed to Hermes Trismegistus incorporated these astrological concepts
- Tarot cards originated in 15th century Italy with no initial astrological associations
- The systematic correspondence between the 36 decans and the 36 numbered Minor Arcana cards (2-10 of each suit) was developed much later
- Aleister Crowley further refined this system for his Thoth Tarot deck designed 1938-1943
The Astrological Framework:
- The zodiac wheel divided into 36 decans (10° segments of each sign)
- Each decan corresponds to a specific Minor Arcana card in the Thoth Tarot
- The Sun's journey through these decans creates a natural sequence
- This ancient system dates back to Egyptian astrology and was refined through Hermetic traditions
FIVE OF DISKS
First Decan of Taurus (April 20-April 30, 2025)
The Sun is between 0 degrees and 10 degrees in the sign of Taurus.
- On April 20 the Sun enters the first decan of Taurus, corresponding to the Five of Disks in the Thoth Tarot deck—the Lord of Worry.
- The Five of Disks represents Mercury in Taurus—analytical energy manifesting through the Fixed Earth element
- Mercury expression within Venus territory - Analysis, communication, and mental processes applied to material concerns
- Brings challenges around material stability, physical wellbeing, and practical concerns
- As we transition from the fiery completion of Aries season, this card shows us how we must ground ourselves in material reality and address practical challenges
- Progression: Moving from fiery completion (Four of Wands) to earthy challenge
- Five disks arranged in an inverted manner symbolizing material instability
- Each disk contains a different geometric shape and color: Pink triangle; Yellow square; Light blue circle; Black eclipse/oval; White/grey crescent moon
- The golden/yellow lines connecting the disks create tension and instability in the pattern
- The dark blue background with rays breaking through represents the challenging Mercury in Taurus energy - thoughts (Mercury) becoming fixated on material concerns (Taurus)
- The worry represented in this card is precisely what Jesus counseled against when he said, "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself" (Matthew 6:34).
THE ACE OF DISKS & THE HIEROPHANT
Supporting Cards for the First Decan of Taurus (Five of Disks)
ACE OF DISKS (Root of Earth)
- At its center is a golden disk with a ten-pointed star (decagram) pattern
- Contains a smaller pentagram at its core with three interlocking circles (similar to the Hierophant's wand)
- The central disk is surrounded by wings, plant fronds, and pine cones arranged in a symmetrical pattern
- The entire image has the appearance of a stylized flower or cosmic egg of creation
- The green fronds represent growth and fertility, while the pine cones symbolize the pineal gland and spiritual awakening, as well as fertility and regeneration
- Around the edge of the central disk, we can see the word “TO MEGA THIRION" inscribed in capital Greek letters. The inscription translates to: The Great Beast
- This interpretation resonates with Jesus's teachings about the Kingdom of God being within you (Luke 17:21) and his emphasis on developing spiritual awareness beyond material attachments.
- As the Ace of the suit, this card represents the pure essence or seed of the earth element - the ultimate potential of material manifestation, wealth, and physical reality. It symbolizes the primordial energy from which all material forms emerge.
- The rich green and gold colors reinforce the connection to fertility, abundance, and material wealth. The entire card radiates a sense of wholeness, completion, and perfect balance - the ideal state of material existence before it becomes subject to the complexities and challenges seen in cards like the Five of Disks.
- Potential: Seed of all material manifestation
- Foundation: Solid basis for growth and development
- Purity: Uncorrupted material essence
- Fertility: Productive capacity within material realm
- Wholeness: Complete expression of earth element
- The Ace of Disks provides the pure material potential obscured by the Five's challenges
- The Ace represents the perfect blueprint that the Five must strive to remember
- Together they remind us that limitation (Five) is a temporary phase in the cycle of manifestation (Ace)
- The Ace shows the pristine origin that remains available even amidst the Five's difficulties
- The concept of divine abundance manifesting on earth resonates with Jesus's parables about the Kingdom of God, particularly those involving seeds, growth, and harvest (like the Parable of the Sower).
THE HIEROPHANT (Major Arcana V)
- The central figure wears orange/golden robes
- Holds a three-ringed wand (the triple circle symbol), representing his authority as a spiritual teacher who unites the three worlds (physical, mental, and spiritual)
- The triple rings in Crowley's card could be compared to the Christian Trinity, while the pentagram could represent the five wounds of Christ.
- The pentagram on his chest symbolizes the four elements plus spirit, indicating mastery over the material and spiritual realms
- The blue figure at his feet represents the ancient wisdom traditions that inform his teachings
- He's surrounded by animal figures (elephant, bull, ram, etc.) which are the guardians of sacred knowledge and also represent the zodiacal energies, particularly emphasizing Taurus (the bull) to which this card corresponds
- Tradition: Established systems of knowledge
- Integration: Bringing spiritual wisdom into material form
- Education: Formalized teaching and learning
- Structure: Organized approach to knowledge
- Initiation: Guided entry into deeper understanding
- The Hierophant (Taurus) provides the wisdom tradition needed to understand material challenges
- The Five of Disks shows what happens when we lose connection to spiritual wisdom
- Together they represent the necessity of integrating spiritual and material concerns
- The Hierophant offers the structured approach needed to transform the Five's challenges
