Brief Historical References

  • The Egyptians (circa 3000-2000 BCE) divided the night sky into 36 groups of stars called "decans" (from Greek "deka" meaning ten, as each ruled approximately 10 days)
  • These decans were primarily used for timekeeping at night
  • They were not yet connected to zodiac signs (the 12-sign zodiac came later) or Tarot (which didn't exist)
  • When the Babylonian zodiac of 12 signs was adopted in Hellenistic Egypt after 300 BCE, the decans were reorganized to fit within the zodiac framework (3 decans per sign)
  • Texts attributed to Hermes Trismegistus incorporated these astrological concepts
  • Tarot cards originated in 15th century Italy with no initial astrological associations
  • The systematic correspondence between the 36 decans and the 36 numbered Minor Arcana cards (2-10 of each suit) was developed much later
  • Aleister Crowley further refined this system for his Thoth Tarot deck designed 1938-1943

The Astrological Framework:

  • The zodiac wheel divided into 36 decans (10° segments of each sign)
  • Each decan corresponds to a specific Minor Arcana card in the Thoth Tarot
  • The Sun's journey through these decans creates a natural sequence
  • This ancient system dates back to Egyptian astrology and was refined through Hermetic traditions

SEVEN OF DISKS

Second Decan of Taurus (May 11-May 20, 2025)

The Sun is between 20 degrees and 30 degrees in the sign of Taurus.

  • On May 1 the Sun enters the third decan of Taurus, corresponding to the Seven of Disks in the Thoth Tarot deck—the Lord of Failure.
  • The Seven of Disks corresponds to Saturn in Taurus, which represents a challenging energy combination. Saturn is associated with discipline, limitation, and life lessons, while Taurus relates to material wealth, possessions, and practical matters
  • Circular disks containing what look like warrior/soldier faces (Saturn) and bulls (Taurus)
  • The background features a dark design with leaf or feather-like patterns
  • This card represents: the testing of patience through disappointment
  • Disappointment that comes from attachment to outcomes
  • Necessary period of challenge that tests one's perseverance before potential later success

THE PRINCESS OF DISKS & THE STAR

Supporting Cards for the Third Decan of Taurus (Seven of Disks)

THE STAR (Major Arcana XVII)

  • The card depicts a nude female figure pouring water from two vessels - one golden cup held high, and what appears to be a silver vessel below. She is set against a cosmic background with a large reddish/pink planet or celestial body. The image is dynamic, with flowing lines and spiral energy patterns.
  • She represents the infinite potential of the cosmos and the divine inspiration flowing into our world.
  • It suggests a time of clarity and cosmic alignment after periods of challenge. The card invites us to reconnect with our higher purpose and the divine spark within, helping us recognize our place in the grand cosmic design
  • While most of the card features spiral energy, Crowley deliberately included some linear geometric elements, noting that "the mind of man is obsessed and blinded by geometry which blocks his spiritual vision.” This creates an intentional contrast between spiritual (spiral, infinite possibilities) and material (linear) geometric patterns.

PRINCESS OF DISKS

  • The card shows a figure standing tall in a grove of reeds or bamboo-like stalks against a golden background. She wears a horned headdress and appears to be draped in white robes with what looks like a sheepskin or fur cloak. She holds a staff or spear in one hand that points downward, and in the other hand she holds a disk with intricate spiral / circular patterns and yin yang symbol. The overall color scheme uses earthy yellows, browns, and white.
  • The Princess of Disks represents the earthy part of Earth, the most material and tangible aspects of the physical world.
  • Fertility and Creation; New Beginnings; This is about bringing ideas into physical reality.
  • Spiritual Connection to Earth - spiritual wisdom can emerge from engagement with the material world.
  • She reminds us that the most profound spiritual truths can be found through deep engagement with the natural world and its cycles.

A Journey Through Earth, Spirit, and Transformation

The Seven of Disks shows Saturn in Taurus—restrictive energy applied to material matters, creating temporary stagnation. This pause is necessary, as it represents a period of gestation and internal transformation. The "failure" is merely apparent, as it's actually preparing the way for rebirth.

The Star then arrives as divine intervention and inspiration after this difficult period.

Finally, the Princess of Disks embodies the full manifestation of what was being prepared during the "failure" phase and inspired during The Star phase. She brings forth new life from the lessons learned.

DAILY PRACTICE FOR THE THIRD DECAN

Carry a stone to maintain connection to this energy:

  • Shiva Lingam: Shiva Lingam stones are river-polished jasper from the Narmada River in India—they literally embody the process of earth being shaped and refined by water over time. The distinctive patterns and banding in Shiva Lingam stones—with their reddish-brown matrix and cream/egg-colored oval sections—symbolize potential waiting to be activated.
  • Black Tourmaline: Black tourmaline is the most common member of the tourmaline family of minerals. It's characterized by its deep black color, columnar crystal structure, and glossy luster when polished.
  • Smoky Quartz: Symbolizes transmutation, practicality, endurance, releasing old patterns and attachment to immediate results
  • Chrysoprase: The name "chrysoprase" comes from the Greek words "chrysos" meaning "gold" and "prason" meaning "leek" - essentially describing it as a "golden-green leek-colored stone." This Greek etymology reflects its characteristic color. Chrysoprase has a rich history dating back thousands of years. It was known to ancient Greeks and Romans, who prized it as a decorative stone. In ancient times, it was sometimes confused with emerald due to its vibrant green color. It was reportedly one of Alexander the Great's favorite gemstones.
